What's your Relationship with Sugar? Friend, Enemy, or Friendly Enemy?!?

Updated: Dec 16, 2018

My Experience with Sugar…

Begins with my son, Joe, and HIS relationship with food.

On the first day of pre-school when he was 4 ½ years old, he had a toxic allergic reaction to mold that was in the building, and over a period of 3 months it shut down his immune system. With infection after infection, and anti-biotic after anti-biotic, his stomach became stripped of all the healthy bacteria and leaky gut formed. What is leaky gut? Leaky gut is when the smooth lining of your intestines are torn and food particles escape into your blood stream. Your ever so powerful immune system jumps in and starts attacking these little food particles as foreign invaders and he became allergic to dairy, wheat, eggs, soy and corn (although, we didn’t know this is what was happening at the time).

Through his super dedication to the elimination diet, and seeking alternative therapy, we got him on the mend and healthier than ever…that is…until the next time.

A few years later, at a resort in Florida, he was exposed again to mold and the whole thing started all over again. This time we saw someone who does live blood analysis; have you ever seen that before? It’s super cool! Not only did we see the food particles floating around in his blood, we saw giant chunks of YEAST floating around too (seriously, you could totally see them!) Since he is allergic to mold, and yeast is a moldy fungus, his body was inundated with those little buggers!

No wonder his immune system was shutting down. No wonder he had no energy. No wonder he was lifeless and laying on the couch all time. Poor kid.

And guess what feeds yeast? SUGAR does.

It’s a vicious cycle: yeast in the body craves sugar, so you eat sweets to satisfy the yeast cravings. The yeast grows and multiplies making you want more sugar. An endless cycle.

The Good News?

What feels like an endless cycle doesn’t have to be. You CAN take back control of what is controlling you.

With Joe, we shut down that yeast by not including any sugars in his diet and built him back up with probiotics and other gut rebuilding herbs, supplements and homeopathy.

For the last 8 years, Joe has stayed on a restricted sugar diet to keep his yeast/candida overgrowth in check. He remembers what it’s like to feel crappy, and doesn’t take his health for granted anymore. It’s been his choice to steer clear of the foods that ail him. This is why he has been able to play his favorite sport, hockey, at a competitive level. This is why he can focus on his academics and be an honor student. He chooses to stay away from processed sugars so his body and brain can operate optimally. He’s a 16 year-old who reads labels and chooses health; and I couldn’t be a more proud mama bear.

Supporting Joe in his health journey has made me a strong advocate for educating others on how they, too, can transform their health through healthy swaps. I want you to know that you have the power and the choice to make healthy changes in your nutrition and lifestyle.

If you are struggling with sugar cravings…

PLEASE, do not judge yourself or feel guilty. Sugar is highly addictive, and it's real sneaky. In fact, did you know that added sugar is hiding in 74% of packaged foods? Some of this includes foods that many of us consider healthy like yogurt, energy or breakfast bars and pure fruit juices, for example. Unfortunately, it's not as obvious as lollipops and gummy bears anymore.

A significant part of the struggle is simply not knowing where the sugar is hiding, and what you can do (and eat) differently to help curb those cravings. Once you understand how to eliminate the cravings for these foods, I strongly believe you will feel more in control of what you eat.

Afterall, knowledge is power.
